Director of Nursing
Description
Supervises and coordinates activities of personnel in the operating room. Ensures adherence to procedure and schedule. Supervises the procurement and maintenance of equipment and supplies, staffing and training of employees, and budgeting. May oversee pre- and post-operative care of patients. Operating Room Manager is responsible for the quality of patient care, resource and fiscal management in the operating room setting. The staffing of the Center is based on a teamwork concept. Employees may be cross trained in other clinical areas and may be expected to perform duties other than their normal ones as staffing and patient needs change.

- Responsible for managing, directing, and supervising employees and patient activities in the operating room setting.
- Responsible for operating room staff performance, staff recruitment, staff retention, and staff development.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Promotes the mission, vision, and values of the organization.
- Following Center policies and procedures; standards of care set by state board of nursing, and state Nurse Practice Act and other governing agency regulations.
- Adhering to principles of Universal Precautions. Maintains confidentiality of patient and Center related business.
- Assures quality of care by adhering to therapeutic standards; measuring health outcomes against patient care goals and standards; making or recommending necessary adjustments. Assesses the quality of care rendered by the OR staff.
- Responsible for managing, directing, and supervising operating room services and patient activities.
- Defines and maintains the standards of nursing practice in the operating room.
- Ensures adherence to procedure and schedule in the operating room setting.
- Ensures the proper function of equipment and quantity of supplies. Ensures cost-conscious use of all resources.
- Serving as a patient advocate and safety monitor, the circulating nurse observes the surgery and ensures that no aspect of patient care is missed.
- Defines and maintains the standards of nursing practice in the institution. Assesses the quality of care rendered.
- Initiates the development of policies and procedures that govern nursing services and other services under his or her supervision.
- Verifies employee credentials under his or her position supervision.
- Collaborates with other departments and agencies regarding resources and services for improved patient care and staff development.
- Plans, develops, and implements a budget process for staffing and services rendered in the OR.
- Evaluates the quality and cost-effectiveness of staffing and services within the goals of the OR.
- Fosters a smooth functioning, efficient organization through timely and effective resolution of disputes.
- Responsible for recruiting, hiring, staff retention, performance evaluation and staff development in the operating room setting.
- Ensures compliance with regulations of governing bodies and accrediting organizations by continually monitoring the operating room service delivery and initiating changes as required.
- Serves as a spokesperson for nursing matters and represents the center with professional nursing and related organizations. Participates in meetings and committees.
- Encourages and supports research and improvement studies that can make meaningful contributions to the quality and economy of nursing services.
- Regular, physical attendance on a predictable basis is essential to the performance of this job.
- Performs other duties as assigned.

- Basic computer skills (e.g., Microsoft® Word).
- Uses problem-solving and conflict resolution skills to foster effective work relationships with team members.
- Exhibits favorable bedside manner including listening and communication skills.
- Function independently without constant supervision. Ability to prioritize and handle multiple tasks.
- Ability to read and legibly write, communicate appropriately and effectively, understand, and execute instructions as needed and visually distinguish color.
- Using logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions, or approaches to problems.
Qualifications and Experience
- Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing, preferred.
- Graduate from an accredited school of nursing.
- Current registered nurse licensure in state of employment.
- Five (5) years’ experience in operating room nursing.
- A minimum of two (2) years’ experience with clinical supervision in a surgical setting.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
- Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification.
- Certified Nurse, Operating Room (CNOR) certification, preferred.
- Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification, preferred.
